SURFACE/WEARING
4.75mm 鈥 Nominal maximum aggregate size is a promising, low-cost asphalt mixture. This mix, when applied as a thin layer, has the potential to provide a very smooth riding surface and correct surface defects.
9.5 and 12.5mm 鈥 Surface mixes usually consist of a smaller maximum aggregate size (9.5 or 3/8鈥 / 12.5mm or 1/2鈥). Wearing/surface mixes are designed to provide a smoother riding surface and to seal the surface from water penetration.
BINDER/BASE
19mm 鈥撎鼵onsists of one or more lifts of structural HMA place below the surface layers, distributing traffic loads preventing deformation in the pavement foundation.
25mm 鈥撎齌his layer in the pavement system sits immediate below the wearing course, or binder course if used. Consisting of a larger maximum aggregate size (25mm or 1鈥), base course provides a strong foundation for the wearing course.
SPECIALIZED MIXES
Gap Graded/SMA 鈥撎齍sed exclusively as a wearing course, Gap Graded mixes are used for paving of heavy traffic areas where rutting and fatigue cracking are concerns. Gap Graded mixes, or Stone Matrix Asphalt, have a relatively high binder content to provide good durability.
P-401/Airport 鈥撎鼶esign specifically used on FAA and Airfield pavement projects. This mix is intended for use in construction of runways, taxiways and apron projects.
Permeable Asphalt Treated Base 鈥 A range of sustainable materials used for the movement of storm water through the surface in addition to reduce runoff. Examples include roads, paths, car parking lots, cycle paths and airport shoulders.
MISCELLANEOUS
Coldpatch 鈥 A cost effect repair for driveways, sidewalks and parking lots. Coldpatch can also be used for manhole maintenance and temporary patching for utility projects.
Tackcoat 鈥撎齌hin layers of asphalt that are used in construction or refacing of driveways, roads and highways. This type of product is used to help the layers of asphalt laid down to bond together with fore efficiency.
